Shakespeare a Vicenza

This short compilation of video and still photographs was taken by friends as we were preparing for the opening of the Shakespeare Festival in the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza, Italy. This most extraordinary theatre was completed in 1585 shortly after the death of its architect the celebrated Palladio and is one of only three Rennaisance theatres remaining in the world, all to be found in Italy. The first half of the performance incorporated readings from Shakespeare given in costume and chamber music of that same period both sung and instrumental. Most of the arrangements were mine with the notable exception of Sigh No More (Thomas Ford)which was taken down by ear from the only recording we could find by Will Searle who then went on to sing it accompanied by my good self. The concert took place on September 14th, 2016, part of the tour of Italy with the Whitgift Chamber Orchestra and their soloists, winners of the Whitgift International Music Competition from 2013 and 2015. I was privileged and honoured to be invited on the tour for my expertise in Elizabethan lute music which formed an integral part of the Shakespearian celebrations.
